What is the general pattern of height growth?

Height growth is a comprehensive expression of skeletal development and represents the sum of the length of the head, spine and lower extremities. 3-year-olds are often measured in the prone position because of the inaccuracy of standing measurements, so they are referred to as length. Height growth is a regular and continuous process, but also has stages. Height growth shows different characteristics at different stages of life: the growth of height is fastest in the fetal period. At present, the average birth length of normal newborns in China’s cities is 50 cm. Male infants are slightly longer than female infants. The growth rate of length after birth is the fastest in the first year, which is faster in the first 3 months after birth, with an average monthly growth of 3.0-3.5 cm; 3-6 months with an average monthly growth of 2.0 cm; 6-12 months with an average monthly growth of 1.0-1.5 cm. Thus, height increases from about 50 cm at birth to 75 cm at 1 year of age, with a total increase of about 25 cm in the first year of life. growth slows down after 1 year of age and increases by about 10 cm throughout the second year, reaching 85 cm at 2 years of age. After 2 years of age, the growth rate decreases rapidly and remains stable at an average of about 5-8 cm per year. Height growth accelerates significantly again in adolescence. The average age of onset of puberty is 10-12 years. Girls start 1-2 years earlier than boys. The height growth spurt during puberty usually lasts for about 3 years. Boys can grow 7-9 cm and up to 10-12 cm per year, and girls can grow 6-8 cm per year. Throughout the accelerated growth period of puberty, boys and girls grow an average of 28 cm and 25 cm tall, respectively. Generally, when height growth begins to accelerate significantly during puberty, children’s height can reach 80% of their adult height, and when they reach the peak age of pubertal height growth, children’s height can reach 90% of their adult height. After this period, height growth slows down significantly, and when girls reach 17 years of age and boys reach 20 years of age, normal child height growth has basically stopped.
