What is a negative platelet antibody?

Negative platelet antibodies indicate that they are normal. The concept of platelet antibodies is due to a disturbance in the functioning of the body’s own immune system, resulting in the production of autoantibodies. Platelet antibody screening is done to ensure the safety of the blood transfusion process and to safeguard the life of the patient. Platelets that are not suitable for transfusion will not be fed into the patient’s body. Normal human platelets do not produce autoantibodies and are negative. A negative platelet antibody screen means that the serum examined does not contain antibodies corresponding to known antigens and that platelets can be transfused without causing unfavorable harm. When positive, it is most often seen in diseases such as multiple blood transfusions, primary thrombocytopenic purpura, and autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura.
