Is high myopia hereditary?

  High myopia can be inherited. However, the disease develops only if the pair of genes involved in myopia are both causative of the disease; if only one of them is causative and the other is normal, the disease does not develop, but is only a carrier. Thus, the combination of two highly myopic individuals has a 90% or greater chance of developing the disease in their children. A highly myopic person who combines with a carrier of the myopia gene may have half of his or her children be highly myopic. In contrast, a highly myopic person who combines with a normal or low to moderately myopic person has a 10% chance of having a child with high myopia.  However, people with high myopia do not have to be too pessimistic. Most people with high myopia can still get better corrected vision with myopic glasses, or they can wear contact lenses, which are also good.
