Advantages and disadvantages of porcelain veneers

The main advantage of all-ceramic veneers is that the preparation is very conservative and the amount of tooth grinding is low, mostly around 0.6 mm. In some cases, no grinding is even required, which can give more protection to the pulp and avoid the discomfort of sensitivity or pulpitis caused by full crown restoration. The color, luster and texture of all-ceramic veneers are closer to natural teeth, more beautiful and realistic, and the color is stable and resistant to discoloration. The highly polished all-porcelain surface has a good edge fit, which is better for the health of the gums and will not cause discoloration or inflammation of the gums. Porcelain has high intrinsic strength and is much more resistant to abrasion than resin. The disadvantages of porcelain veneers are slightly more expensive than traditional resin veneers, and require a higher level of skill and complicated bonding steps. The doctor needs to mix the right color for the patient through a color test paste, and then perform the final bonding. After bonding, the gum margins should be polished to remove excess bonding agent to prevent irritation to the gums.
