The umbilicus is the center of the abdomen and an important cosmetic structure of the torso. The umbilicus has been used as a sign of youth and beauty in all cultures. The human eye unconsciously falls to the center of the abdomen (umbilicus), which makes the position and appearance of the umbilicus particularly important. Therefore, an aesthetically pleasing umbilicus is necessary for a beautiful abdomen and vice versa. Often, most of the plastic surgeon’s attention is focused on how to conceal the abdominoplasty incision, neglecting the umbilicus, leaving it with a visible scar or poor appearance. In order to create an aesthetically pleasing umbilicus, the surgeon must first be aware of the features of the umbilicus. Although there is anatomic variation from patient to patient and different preferences between surgeons and patients, there are certain features that are recognized to affect the aesthetics of the umbilicus. The vertical position of the umbilicus, the depth of the umbilicus, and the size of the umbilicus should all be taken into account in abdominoplasty.
