What medicine to take for children with intestinal colds

Pediatric gastrointestinal colds are mostly caused by viruses such as coxsackievirus along with bacterial mixed infections, also known as “vomiting epiglottitis”. Its main clinical manifestations are cold symptoms, accompanied by stomach distension, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, sour breath, yellow and thick tongue coating. In severe cases, it can lead to dehydration and electrolyte disorders. Children with gastrointestinal flu mainly focus on rehydration, anti-diarrhea and maintaining electrolyte balance. If the symptoms of dehydration have already appeared, the child can be treated with intravenous rehydration. If there is repeated vomiting even after fasting and water fasting, further symptomatic treatment such as stomach protection and antiemetic is needed. For severe diarrhea, antidiarrheal medications such as montelukast, granules of decadron, Bacillus cereus capsules, and tannin yeast can be administered. Symptomatic supportive treatment such as acetaminophen granules and ibuprofen should also be given to reduce fever and physical cooling for fever and other cold symptoms. Children suffering from gastrointestinal type of cold can be given some herbal medicines that eliminate food and induce stagnation at the same time, such as Jia Wei Bao He Wan, Jian Gastrodia Oral Liquid Zhu, Persian Monkey Date San, etc. If the child’s abdominal distension and abdominal pain and vomiting are serious, he can take Si Mo Tang Oral Liquid to stop vomiting and eliminate food first, and then take other medicines after about half an hour. If the medication is not relieved satisfactorily must be used under the guidance of a doctor, except if there are complications, or other diseases misdiagnosed.
