Post-Knee Arthroscopy Rehabilitation Program

  I. Early stage (1-7 days of surgery)
  1. On the day of surgery
Immediately after surgery, fix the knee joint in a 30° flexed position with a movable splint or brace.
Do not do straight leg raising exercises after surgery
After the anesthesia of ankle pump exercise subsides, start to move the toes and ankle joint. The method is forceful, slow, full range flexion and extension of the ankle joint for 5 minutes/group, multiple groups/hour.
Quadriceps isometric exercise row of anterior thigh muscle tensing and relaxation exercise, contraction for 5 seconds, relaxation for 2 seconds, 50 times/group, 3 groups/day.
  2.Day 1~3 after surgery
Continue to do ankle pump exercise and quadriceps isometric exercise.
Do not do flexion and extension exercises for 3 days after surgery.
On the first postoperative day, you can walk on crutches, but the affected limb should be protected by 30° flexion in splint or brace, and the affected limb should not bear weight on crutches.
  3.Day 4 after surgery
Continue ankle pump exercises and quadriceps isometric exercises.
Straight leg raising exercises, lateral leg raising exercises and posterior straight leg raising exercises can be performed under the protection of 30° flexion of the brace.
Perform passive flexion exercises ranging from 40° to 60°, and continue the brace in 30° flexion after the exercises.
Walk on crutches, but the affected limb should be under the protection of splint or brace, and the affected limb should not bear weight on crutches.
  4.Postoperative day 5~7
  Continue the above exercises.
Passive flexion exercises Range exercises to 40°~80°.
II. Initial period (2~6 weeks after surgery)
Continue and strengthen the above exercises.
  1. 2 weeks after surgery, the maximum range of passive knee flexion is 20°~90°, but the range of repetitive knee flexion exercises is 40°~70°.
  2. 3 weeks postoperatively, passive flexion to 15°~100°.
3, 4 weeks postoperatively passive flexion to 10°~110°.
4.Passive flexion to 10°~115° at 5 weeks postoperatively.
5.Passive flexion to 10°~120° at 6 weeks postoperatively.
Walk with crutches and carry up to one-third of the weight of the affected limb.
Third, the middle term (7 weeks~3 months after surgery)
Continue and strengthen the above exercises.
  1.7 weeks after surgery
Do not put full weight on the affected limb.
Passive flexion of the knee joint to 5°~120°.
  2.8 weeks after surgery
Passive flexion of the knee to 0°~125°.
You can try to lose the crutches and start walking with full weight bearing.
  3. 9 weeks after surgery
Passive flexion and extension of the knee to a range of 0°~150°, basically the same as the healthy side.
Splint or brace can be removed.
Focus on practicing full extension of the knee.
  4.10~12 weeks after surgery
Exercise until the knee mobility is the same as normal.
  4. Late stage (3~6 months after surgery)
Emphasis on muscle strength and endurance recovery training
1.Half squat exercise slowly squat in standing position, range from 0°~80°, decide the number of times according to your physical condition.
2.N rope muscle muscle strength exercises
3.Knee coordination and proprioceptive exercises such as acceleration, deceleration and change of direction exercises for both lower limbs.
  V. Recovery period (7 months~1 year after surgery)
Rehabilitation purpose: full recovery of sports or strenuous sports; gradually resume special training; strengthen muscle strength and joint stability during strenuous activities; muscle strength of the affected side should reach 85% or more of the healthy side, and there should be no pain and obvious swelling during sports.
