Depending on the severity of the injury, the tongue can be left to heal on its own, be treated with surgical stitches or medication.
1. If the damage to the tongue is relatively small, i.e., there is no obvious bleeding point or the wound is relatively shallow; generally there is no need for special treatment and the wound will heal on its own, but during the healing period, we should keep the mouth clean and avoid eating spicy and stimulating food.
2. If the tongue wound is deep and large and bleeds a lot, conventional compression hemostasis methods can not effectively stop bleeding or affect the normal movement of the tongue; we should seek medical treatment to clean the wound and suture treatment to restore the normal shape and function of the tongue.
3. During the healing period of tongue injury, anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to promote healing (e.g. cotrimoxazole gargle, amoxicillin or metronidazole, etc.) as prescribed by the doctor in order to effectively prevent the infection of the wound.
It is recommended to consult a doctor for symptomatic treatment to avoid delaying the condition, and the use of medication should be in accordance with the doctor’s instructions.
