Uterine fibroids often recur and do not usually lead to cancer.
Uterine fibroids are common female tumors, which are basically benign tumors formed by the proliferation of the smooth muscle of the uterus. It is mainly related to hormone levels and genetic factors, and is most common in women aged 30 to 50, and may cause prolonged menstruation, increased menstrual flow, and lower abdominal swelling. Uterine fibroids have the risk of recurrence but the chance of malignancy is relatively low.
Recurrence of fibroids is associated with multiple fibroids, younger age, and poor lifestyle. When a fibroid recurrence is detected, the size, location, and accompanying symptoms of the fibroid need to be evaluated. If the fibroid is small and there is no discomfort, regular checkups can be conducted first; if the fibroid is large and the examination evaluates the risk of malignant changes, surgery and other treatments need to be considered.
Patients with frequent recurrence of fibroids should have regular checkups, and should seek timely medical attention if the fibroids continue to grow after menopause or increase in size within a short period of time.
