Periodontitis is treated by basic treatments such as supragingival cleaning and subgingival scraping to thoroughly clean tartar and plaque, which can be followed by root planing after subgingival scraping to remove irritants and promote healing of inflamed tissues. Generally in severe periodontitis leading to periodontal abscess, adjunctive use of metronidazole for treatment.
