How to distinguish functional headache from organic headache

The causes of headaches are very complex and vary greatly in severity. The common cold can cause headaches, as can encephalitis, meningitis, and brain tumors. Headaches are often a red flag for many diseases and may even be life-threatening if left untreated. Therefore, you should learn to initially determine the priority of headache and distinguish whether it is a functional headache or an organic headache, and seek medical attention early for the following types of headache to avoid delaying the condition. 1.Children and adolescents with chronic progressive headache with low-grade fever, vomiting and stiff neck, and a history of tuberculosis can be detected, should consider the possibility of tuberculous meningitis. 2.Patients with hypertension or arteriosclerosis in middle-aged and old age who suddenly develop headache with dizziness, impaired consciousness and hemiparesis should consider the possibility of cerebral hemorrhage. 3.The possibility of subarachnoid hemorrhage should be considered in the case of sudden onset of severe headache with vomiting and mild impaired consciousness in young adults. 4.In winter and spring, if sudden severe headache occurs with chills and fever, frequent vomiting, stiff neck, change of consciousness and bleeding spots (spots) on the body, the possibility of rheumatoid brain should be considered. 5.Headache that occurs after head injury, accompanied by transient loss of consciousness, reoccurrence of severe headache soon after waking up, accompanied by vomiting, irritability, followed by gradual confusion, should be considered as serious intracranial damage, and early medical attention should be sought. 6.Headache with one side of the eye pain, the examination shows that the eye on the painful side is red, the pupil is dilated and the visual acuity is reduced, the possibility of glaucoma should be thought of. 7.How to identify brain tumor: Many patients, because they do not have a proper understanding of headache, always suspect that they have a tumor in their brain and have a heavy mental burden. How to identify brain tumor? Any progressive headache of unknown cause, accompanied by vomiting, blurred vision and diplopia, should consider the possibility of intracranial occupying lesion (brain tumor). Headache is the first symptom in 20%-40% of brain tumors. 90% of brain tumors have headache during the course of the disease, but headache caused by brain tumor is only a minority of all headache patients. Headache from brain tumor is often episodic in the early stage and heavy in the morning, but in the later stage, it is persistent and dull. The headache increases when coughing, sneezing, or defecating, and it is rarely relieved without pain. The headache reappears one day at a time and may be accompanied by diplopia, hemiparesis, hemianesthesia, or other neurological symptoms. Prevention of tension headache can be done as follows: (1) First of all, the patient and the doctor should work closely to find the cause, which of course may involve medical, biological, psychological, ethical, social and other factors. Only when the cause is really found can we find out the psychological and emotional countermeasures, which is a very important link and a way to cure the root of the problem. Most of them are due to work environment, interpersonal relationship, social competition, marriage, family and life trivialities, etc. We must distinguish them correctly and treat them differently. We often help patients to treat and solve the conflicts in work and life correctly, and do our best to avoid tension headache caused by emotional tension, anxiety and impatience. (2) In addition to paying attention to your own psychological adjustment, you can also adjust the human body from the environmental and physiological perspectives to reduce headache attacks. Pay attention to the prevention and correction of various bad postures to avoid causing continuous contraction of the muscles of the head, neck and back of the shoulder, such as long-term low head and desk work. Pay attention to your own regulation every day. A warm bath in the morning or at night before going to sleep, a walk or a small jog in the fresh air, hot compresses on the neck and back, gentle massage on the scalp and neck muscles, and pressure on acupuncture points with the fingers, etc. These methods allow the patients themselves to personally experience that their own relaxation can reduce the spasm and contraction of local muscles, thus alleviating the headache. Relaxation training is the most common and effective method to prevent tension headache.
