Esophageal foreign body is one of the common emergencies, which is a foreign body temporarily lodged or embedded in the esophagus for various reasons. It is often caused by careless eating or swallowing foreign bodies, such as fish spikes, bones, toys, etc., resulting in large foreign bodies temporarily lodging in the throat or in narrow areas such as the entrance to the esophagus, which can block the airway in severe cases and cause serious complications. Patients often present with a foreign body sensation in the esophagus, difficulty swallowing, pain in the upper esophagus, and pain behind the sternum. Serious complications include esophageal fistula, penetration of large blood vessels and even life-threatening conditions, which need to be treated immediately upon diagnosis. Foreign bodies in the esophagus can occur at any age, with the elderly and young children being the most common.
