Severe redness and swelling of the gums may be due to an acute attack of chronic periodontitis resulting in a periodontal abscess. In this case, during the acute phase of the abscess, local rinsing and medication can be applied to the gums to rinse out the food debris and plaque in the periodontal pockets, and then local anti-inflammation can be performed with drops of iodine glycerin or minocycline hydrochloride in the periodontal pockets. If a periodontal abscess forms, it needs to be incised and drained in a timely manner. After the acute period, systematic periodontal treatment should be performed, including treatments such as ultrasonic scaling and periodontal scaling. Another cause of gum redness and swelling is periapical periodontitis, which produces redness, swelling, pressure pain, sinus tracts and abscesses in the apical area of the gums. If the redness and swelling of the gums is present at the last molar, most of them are suffering from pericoronitis of the wisdom tooth, and an adequate amount of antibiotics is needed to reduce the inflammation. If the redness and swelling of the whole gum is caused by fire or vitamin deficiency, oral multivitamin tablets and anti-flammatory medications such as fire clearing gardenia tablets and niuhuang detoxification tablets are needed.
