Thyroid cancer can grow in any part of the thyroid, and it does not mean that the isthmus is more serious than other parts of the thyroid. If the thyroid cancer is located in the isthmus, it is mainly related to the choice of resection scope. If the thyroid cancer is located in the unilateral lobe of the gland, such as the left or right side, and there is no nodule on the opposite side, the surgery may only need to do the unilateral lobe of the gland plus the isthmus and the lymph node dissection of the central area on the same side. However, if the thyroid cancer is located in the isthmus, if the lesion is large, a total thyroidectomy with bilateral lymph node dissection in the central region is required.
