Retrograde menstruation is the occurrence of nosebleeds, hematemesis, and vomiting of blood during menstruation. Retrograde menstruation is mostly caused by Liver Depression and Fire (Liver Qi not being able to pass through resulting in the production of fire and heat) and Yin deficiency and Lung Heat. Liver depression and transforming fire will cause the Qi of the flushing veins to flourish and blood to move during menstruation, and the blood will follow the Qi and fire upwards to reverse menstruation. Yin deficiency and Lung heat will result in heat injury to the Lung channels, and the blood will follow the Qi of the Charge Vessel upwards. If the bleeding from the nose and mouth before menstruation is recognized as a solid heat that forces the blood to flow upward, the treatment is to drain heat and cool the blood, and is often treated by Shunjing Tang, Sanhuang Siwu Tang, and other prescriptions with additions and subtractions. If it is identified as a deficiency of yin and internal disturbance of heat, the treatment is to nourish the yin and clear the heat, commonly used in Maimendong Tang and Rhinoceros Jiao Dihuang Tang with additions and subtractions. It is recommended to use reasonable medication under the guidance of a professional doctor, do not use your own medication, so as not to delay the condition.
