Precautions for children with dwarfism-not only medication and injections are considered treatment

Children are the hope of every family; height is one of the most remarkable features of a person. Every parent wants their children to grow taller. Parents are often seen to turn to various height-enhancing products: such as height-enhancing drugs, height-enhancing foods, height-enhancing shoes (insoles), height-enhancing underwear, height-enhancing knee pads, etc. Are these products really necessary? After years of experience as a pediatric endocrinologist and considering the misconceptions of many parents in the clinic, I think it is important to promote some basic knowledge about children’s growth. First of all, we know that human growth is a complex process, related to genetics, nutrition, exercise, sleep, chronic diseases, endocrine factors, mental factors, etc. The combination of these factors makes the adult world tall, short, fat and thin in many ways. For the above factors, I will analyze them one by one. 1, genetic factors Genetic factors only account for about 80% of the determinants of human height, so we will first focus on the parents’ height, because the parents’ height determines the main basis of children’s height. People can not choose their parents, so the child to grow taller, can only work from other aspects. 2, chronic diseases Children’s chronic diseases such as hypothyroidism, renal tubular acidosis, metabolic diseases, etc. can affect children’s height; should be detected early, early diagnosis and early treatment. 3, nutrition To reasonably regulate the diet, both to ensure adequate nutrition, but also appropriate moderation. Parents often ask: “What food can children eat to grow taller? It is recommended that parents go to a Xinhua bookstore and buy a copy of the “Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents” (compiled by the Chinese Nutrition Association) to learn about nutrition. Emphasize two points: (1) No partial diet (2) Don’t eat snacks and drinks, and don’t move to give your child food to eat; eat regularly, and have an empty stomach and hunger before three meals, because growth hormone will be secreted more when hungry than when full, please keep in mind. If zinc, calcium or vitamin D deficiency is detected, it can also be appropriately supplemented. 4. Sleep Sleep should be sufficient and regular. As growth hormone is mainly secreted during deep sleep at night, especially between 11 pm and early morning, it is secreted more. Children generally enter deep sleep only 1-2 hours after falling asleep; it is recommended that children should go to bed at 8:30 to 9:00 pm. It is recommended to watch TV, computer, and play mobile games for less than 30 minutes overall per day; at the same time, don’t put TV and computer in the room where the child sleeps. 5, mental factors Parents should maintain a good and happy mood. Research has found that parents who are nervous, depressed and anxious will also affect the growth of their children. On the other hand, the lack of love, long-term separation from parents, lonely and introverted children will also grow a little slower. Parents are advised to make efforts to create a happy and relaxed family atmosphere so that their children can grow happily. No worries and no worries are good for growth and development. 6, exercise Reasonable exercise is good for growth. Insist on doing aerobic exercise (medium intensity, regular, continuous, no less than 30 minutes each time, as far as possible in the outdoors), in a certain period of time can make the body growth hormone content increased significantly, with the increase in the blood growth hormone content, the tubular bone growth area is then active, thus increasing height. However, too little exercise (such as walking, cars, etc.) or heavy exercise (such as marathon running, long-distance skiing, etc.) will not increase height, the former because of insufficient stimulation, and the latter because it makes the body extremely weak (for example, completing a thousand jumps a day and excessive heavy barbell weightlifting exercises can even hinder the growth of long bones). According to medical experts, children and adolescents of the same age and gender, those who regularly participate in physical activity have an average height difference of 4-8 cm, and in some cases even more, than those who are not physically active. Exercise is best: (1) moderate intensity; (2) each time preferably more than 30 minutes, preferably longitudinal movement, jogging, slow jump rope, etc. is good. Effective exercise programs are bar, bouncing, swimming, playing basketball, pull-ups, touching high, jogging, jumping rope, cycling, playing basketball, playing badminton, swimming, etc. can also be. 7, endocrine factors The more common is growth hormone deficiency. It can be treated with growth hormone. The growth hormone currently used is genetically recombinant, and its molecular structure is exactly the same as that of human growth hormone, and since it is a replacement therapy, there are fewer side effects. However, it is still necessary to follow the doctor’s advice and visit the hospital’s specialist clinic regularly during the course of growth hormone treatment. Regular height measurements, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, T4, TSH, blood glucose and insulin tests should be performed to adjust the GH dose and thyroid hormone supplementation in a timely manner. In conclusion, parents should first check the four aspects of nutrition, sleep, mental factors and exercise before considering growth hormone and other medications if necessary. Do not rely on drugs, supplements, etc. Medication and injections are not the only treatment. May every child maximize his or her growth potential!
