What is a fracture of the maxilla?

A maxillary fracture is a fracture of the maxilla that can occur when the maxilla is subjected to a blow from directly below or to the side, which can occur in life due to fights, car accidents, and exposure to violence. The maxilla is located in the middle of the human face and is prominently positioned as a high incidence site for maxillofacial fractures. After a maxillary fracture, the patient will experience painful misalignment of the upper jaw teeth and bleeding, which requires prompt medical attention. An X-ray will reveal the symptoms and location of the maxillary fracture. Maxillary fractures can be treated conservatively if the fracture is insignificant and is a simple linear fracture that does not cause significant tooth displacement. If significant displacement occurs causing significant bleeding or facial deformity, it should be treated by surgery.
