Fractures of the base of the fifth metatarsal, or the base of the fifth metatarsal, usually do not require a brace. The base of the fifth metatarsal is cancellous bone and is often fractured by violent contraction of the short fibularis muscle. Fifth metatarsal base fracture is mostly avulsion fracture, the impact on the function of the joint is relatively small, so simple fifth metatarsal base fracture can be fixed with a bandage or plaster in the valgus position for 4-6 weeks to carry out functional exercises, regular review of the radiographs, healing usually takes about 3 months. If the displacement of the fracture block is obvious or if the fracture is in a special occupation (e.g., professional athletes), surgical treatment is recommended, with minimally invasive internal fixation of double-threaded compression screws, so that the fracture can be anatomically repositioned, and functional exercises can be resumed as soon as possible in order to regain the foot function as soon as possible. If the fracture has not healed for more than 2 months, surgery is also recommended to promote healing. If the fracture is a fifth metatarsal base fracture, it is recommended to review the X-ray of the fracture site regularly to understand the healing status of the fracture, and resume functional exercises as soon as possible to prevent complications and restore foot function as soon as possible.
