Cheng Xi, Department of Gynecology, Cancer Hospital of Fudan University: HPV is the abbreviation for human papillomavirus. Most HPV infections are transient and usually subside within a few months to two years, while persistent HPV infections are common in older women, often with oncogenic HPV and high HPV DNA levels. Only persistent HPV high-risk infections of the cervical epithelium may induce tumor formation. There is only a prophylactic vaccine to prevent infection, and once infected, there is no specific drug available, but interferon can be used vaginally.
