What is watchful waiting treatment for prostate enlargement?

Watchful waiting is a non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical treatment measure that includes patient education, lifestyle guidance, and follow-up. Because prostatic hyperplasia is a progressive, benign proliferative process of prostate histology, its progression is less predictable, and only a few patients may have complications such as urinary retention, renal insufficiency, or bladder stones after a long follow-up period. Therefore, for most patients, wait-and-see is an appropriate management, especially when the patient’s quality of life is not severely affected by lower urinary tract symptoms. Patients with mild lower urinary tract symptoms, as well as those with moderate or greater symptoms while quality of life has not been significantly affected, may be placed on watchful waiting. Before undergoing watchful waiting, patients should undergo a thorough examination to exclude any associated complications.
