Dexmedetomidine is a drug commonly used in clinical anesthesia for the sedation of surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia during tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. The specific dosage is as follows: Adult dose: 4 μg/ml at a concentration of 1 μg/kg, infused slowly over 10 minutes. The product must be diluted with 0.9% sodium chloride solution to a concentration of 4 μg/ml before administration. 2 ml of the product may be removed and added to 48 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride injection to form a total of 50 ml of solution, shaking gently to mix evenly. Strict aseptic technique must be maintained at all times during the procedure. In general, the drug should be visually inspected for particulate matter and color change before intravenous administration. Dose Adjustment: Due to possible pharmacodynamic interactions, it may be necessary to reduce the dose when administered concomitantly with other anesthetics, sedatives, tranquilizers, or opioids (see Drug Interactions). Patients with hepatic or renal impairment and elderly patients may need to consider reducing the dose administered. Drug Compatibility: Because physical compatibility is uncertain, this product should not be given concomitantly with blood or plasma through the same intravenous catheter. This product has been shown to be incompatible when given concomitantly with: amphotericin B, diazepam. Compatibility has been demonstrated when given concomitantly with the following intravenous fluids and medications: 0.9% aqueous sodium chloride, 5% aqueous dextrose.
