Do you need to take folic acid for long term high blood pressure medication?

Folic acid is usually not required for long-term hypertension medication, but supplemental folic acid is needed for those with hyperhomocysteinemia combined with hypertension. Clinical long-term use of drugs to lower blood pressure may enhance the body’s sensitivity to insulin, resulting in symptoms of hypoglycemia. Secondly, it may aggravate renal function damage, elevate plasma creatinine concentration, and even produce azotemia, thus irreversible renal decompensation occurs, or cause hyperkalemia and other uncomfortable symptoms after taking potassium-preserving diuretics. Folic acid is usually not needed to improve the above symptoms after long-term use of antihypertensive drugs. Folic acid is mainly used for folic acid deficiency diseases caused by various reasons and anemia caused by folic acid deficiency, or used as a preventive medicine for women during pregnancy and lactation. Therefore, folic acid cannot effectively improve the above mentioned symptoms caused by long-term use of antihypertensive drugs, so long-term use of hypertension drugs usually do not need to take folic acid, but high homocysteinemia combined with hypertension need to supplement folic acid. If you feel unwell, you should go to the hospital and consult your physician.
