After the diagnosis of pneumothorax is confirmed at the university hospital, please go to our emergency thoracic surgery department, the first floor of the emergency department building, not the outpatient clinic. Bring a chest X-ray taken at the university hospital and a certificate of referral. Please wear short open tops for possible closed drainage retention if conditions permit. Notify friends, housemates, counselors, parents or guardians. Some students whose homes are outside of Beijing or in the suburbs feel that their parents are far away and that pneumothorax is a “minor illness”, so they are reluctant to inform their parents for fear of worrying about them. In fact, pneumothorax is a definite thoracic surgical emergency, and untimely treatment is life-threatening, and the diagnosis and treatment process, like all medical interventions, is risky, not to mention surgical treatment, although most of them are relatively safe. Therefore, timely communication with parents and notification of the situation is especially important for out-of-town students studying in Beijing. If thoracoscopic surgery is required, then the consent and signature of the family or guardian is an important part of a smooth procedure. It is a good idea to have 2 or more students with you when you come to see the doctor, one to take care of you and one to help you with all the procedures and fees. Before having closed drainage, it is best to urinate once, just 1-2 hours after the drainage is done, it is an adaptation process, not very convenient to move. Also prepare a glass of water, the hospital provides boiling water, prepare some cool water for medication. Don’t forget to bring a cell phone charger, and bring an eye mask if possible. Initially, you have to prepare 300-500 RMB for the emergency room, but you have to prepare for the cost of the hospital room and three meals a day. When you receive a hospital note from the doctor, contact the school nurse’s office promptly, and they will usually provide a check. Contact your counselor and the school nurse’s office if you have difficulty with the cost. Change medications and remove stitches as requested by the doctor when you leave the hospital, which can usually be done by the school nurse’s office. Keep your bills for reimbursement. Don’t forget to get a leave of absence note and certificate of exemption.
