Patients with high homocysteine should take folic acid because it can lower homocysteine. By consuming enough folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6, homocysteine levels can be lowered by methylation or transsulfuration metabolism of homocysteine. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Patients with hyperhomocysteine should increase the intake of green leafy veggies, which are rich in folic acid, in their daily diet, and also increase meat and shellfish to supplement vitamin B12, which is also beneficial to the reduction of homocysteine.
