The number of days a patient needs to be hospitalized for preauricular fistula drainage is not easy to determine and depends on the degree of inflammation, the sensitivity of the medication used, and the nutritional supply. In cases of severe inflammation, poor bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics, and poor nutritional status, the treatment is less effective and drainage may take about two weeks. If the infection is well controlled, drainage is usually sufficient for about a week. In case of secondary infection of the preauricular fistula, in addition to strengthening the antibiotic treatment, it is better to perform bacterial culture plus drug sensitivity test to select a sensitive antibiotic for treatment. At the same time, it is necessary to change the medication, clean the pus cavity, and give nutritional support to facilitate wound healing. Therefore, once inflammation has developed in the preauricular fistula, the fistula needs to be removed after the inflammation has been controlled to prevent recurrence.
