A strong cough from 1:00 to 2:00 at night is most often seen in allergic diseases of the respiratory tract, such as cough variant bronchial asthma, while bronchial tuberculosis and infectious lesions of the lungs cannot be excluded. Because vagal hyperfunction occurs more often at night, resulting in bronchoconstriction and increased coughing, this condition belongs to cough variant bronchial asthma. In contrast, nocturnal cough with hot flashes, night sweats, blood in sputum and body wasting requires a high degree of vigilance for infection with tuberculosis, which requires further chest CT, Mycobacterium tuberculosis T-cell testing, checking for antacid bacilli and, if necessary, performing bronchofibroscopy for the presence of bronchial tuberculosis.
