Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic non-specific inflammatory disease of the intestine of unknown etiology, mainly including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), which is clinically characterized by unknown etiology, difficult diagnosis, difficult cure and interdisciplinary treatment. The disease was previously common in North America and Europe and rare in China. However, in recent years, there is an increasing trend of increasing incidence and number of patients in our country year by year. In order to actively respond to this new change and improve the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, in 2009, under the initiative and promotion of academician Li Jieshou, relying on the strong strength of general surgery, a team led by Professor Zhu Weiming began to treat these patients on a large scale and carry out related basic and clinical research. 2013, Nanjing General Hospital established the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment Center, with General Surgery Department Zhu Weiming as the director of the center, in In 2013, Nanjing General Hospital established the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment Center, with Zhu Weiming as the director of the Center and more than 80 beds in the 36 wards of the main hospital and the three external departments of Tangshan Branch. At present, the center has become the most well-known specialized disease center in China in related fields.
More than 95% of the patients come from all over China, and a considerable number of patients come from Beijing, Shanghai and other top hospitals in China. The total number of hits exceeds 12 million and the total number of cases exceeds 5,000, which is far ahead in China. Professor Zhu completed and published the first “Expert Consensus on Nutritional Support Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease” and “Expert Opinion on Risk Factors and Prevention of Postoperative Complications in Inflammatory Bowel Disease”, participated in the completion of the “Consensus Opinion on Diagnosis and Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease” and other programmatic documents, and edited two monographs on “Crohn’s Disease” and “Ulcerative Colitis”. In the past 2 years, the center has actively carried out laparoscopic assisted total colorectal resection and ileal storage pouch anastomosis (IPAA surgery) in response to the current situation of increasing number of patients with ulcerative colitis surgery in China.
In addition to a large amount of clinical work, the center has also established a huge database of inflammatory bowel disease and surgical specimens, carried out relevant clinical and basic research, undertaken a total of 7 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 2 provincial and ministerial level research projects, research funding of more than 10 million yuan, published more than 40 core Chinese journal papers and 41 SCI papers, with a total impact factor of 142.811. Among them, there are 6 papers with impact factor above 5 and 17 papers with impact factor above 3. Prof. Weiming Zhu, the key member of the center, is the supervisor of doctoral and master students in Nanjing University and Nanjing Medical University, and Associate Prof. Jianfeng Gong is the supervisor of master students in Nanjing University, Nanjing Medical University and Southern Medical University, and the two professors have trained 13 doctoral students and 16 master students, of which 9 are studying and 20 are graduated. Three students were awarded the Outstanding Postgraduate Students of Nanjing University, two students received the National Postgraduate Scholarship, three students received the Guanghua Scholarship, one student received the Jiaotong Holdings Scholarship, six students went abroad to attend international academic conferences and make conference presentations or written exchanges, one student was exchanged by the university to study at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands for one year, and one key doctor of the center was selected by the hospital to go to Cleveland Medical Center in the United States for a 1.5-year study in colorectal surgery.
The treatment characteristics of the center: the traditional medical and surgical treatment mode has been changed, and the patients with inflammatory bowel disease are treated in a standardized way through multidisciplinary treatment modes such as drug treatment, biological treatment, nutritional support treatment, endoscopic treatment and surgical operation, etc. Through long-term follow-up of patients, the treatment plan is adjusted in time, so that the majority of patients benefit from it.
