Can Rectal Cancer Be Cured in the Elderly

Whether elderly rectal cancer can be cured is related to the stage of rectal cancer, pathology, treatment method and patient’s status, etc. It has little relationship with age, and it is possible to be cured with early discovery, early diagnosis and early treatment; while for middle and late stage rectal cancer, the prognosis can be improved through comprehensive treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy. At present, the treatment of rectum is still mainly based on surgery. For the lesion re-submucosa, the five-year survival rate after radical surgery reaches 90%; if there is lymph node metastasis, the five-year survival rate is usually lower than 30%. For early diagnosis of rectal cancer in the elderly, surgical resection of the lesion and other treatments are usually performed, and radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other comprehensive treatments are added when necessary, which can improve the surgical resection rate, reduce recurrence and prolong the survival period. If the middle and late stage rectal cancer can be treated by surgery, and after surgery, according to the condition, adjuvant radiotherapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or targeted therapy and other comprehensive treatments, the overall 5-year survival rate after surgery is around 50%. For rectal cancer in the elderly, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time to get a clear diagnosis and treatment so as not to delay the condition.
