Dog bites through clothing are usually not infected with rabies if there is no damage to the skin, but may be infected if there is damage to the skin. Rabies is often spread through broken skin, wounds, mucous membranes, etc. If the skin is intact, rabies is not usually contracted. If you are bitten by a dog through clothing and the skin is broken, whether or not there is bleeding, you should immediately rinse and disinfect the area and get a rabies vaccination within 24 hours. If the skin is intact when bitten through clothing, it is recommended that the skin be carefully cleaned and a disinfectant such as iodophor be applied at the same time, and that the wound be carefully observed for any sensation of pain or irritation to prevent the presence of subtle, undetectable wounds. If there is no irritation and it is determined that there is no skin breakage, rabies vaccination is usually not required.
