Does an MRI require fasting and water intake?

Whether or not MRI requires fasting and water fasting depends on the part of the body to be examined. For abdominal examination, fasting and water fasting are generally required; for other parts of the body, fasting and water fasting are generally not required; and fasting and water fasting are preferred for Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ENMR). Magnetic resonance examination of abdominal organs, such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and gastrointestinal tract, it is necessary to fasting and water, otherwise it will affect the gastrointestinal tract peristalsis, bile secretion, which will lead to poor image quality. On the other hand, abdominal urological MRI and gynecological pelvic MRI do not require water fasting. Other parts of the body, such as the skull, spine, chest, limbs and other parts of the MRI examination, do not require fasting and water. In addition, contrast agent injection is required for enhanced MRI. If the condition permits, it is best to fast and abstain from food and water to prevent aspiration caused by nausea and vomiting; in case of emergency, food and water fasting can also be waived. For MRI examination, make an appointment in advance at the Imaging Department according to the examination area to know the precautions.
