Using Traditional Chinese Medicine to Find the Path to Thawing Gradual Freezing

When it comes to motor neuron disease, many people may not be familiar with it, but when it comes to the “frozen man”, people may be more familiar with it, before the popular ice bucket challenge, the purpose is to arouse everyone’s love and attention to the frozen man. According to the estimation of medical experts in China, there should be at least 70,000 to 80,000 patients in China, according to the prevalence rate of 4 to 6 per 100,000 abroad. Symptoms: progressive atrophy of muscles throughout the body Motor neuron disease, as an irreversible and fatal neurological lesion, is listed as one of the five terminal diseases by the World Health Organization, along with cancer and AIDS. The disease starts in adulthood and progresses very rapidly, starting with muscle atrophy, followed by a slow inability to move the limbs freely, gradually affecting the patient’s swallowing or breathing. The progressive atrophy and weakness of the muscles of the patient’s entire body, as if they were gradually frozen, is why the disease is called “acromegaly”. The patient’s intelligence, memory and senses are unaffected because the sensory nerves are not violated, and the patient eventually dies of respiratory failure while conscious. Although the incidence of this disease is not high, the suffering caused to the patient is enormous. Often, when one person suffers from the disease, the whole family falls into the abyss of suffering. The cause: deficiency of the liver, spleen, kidney and other internal organs Motor neuron disease should belong to the category of “impotence” and “mute rash” in Chinese medicine. The ancient Chinese medical text “Sheng Ji Zong Lu” has recorded the clinical symptoms of this disease “the tongue is mute and cannot speak, the foot is useless”. According to the theory of Chinese medicine, the deficiency of the liver, spleen and kidney is the key to the disease mechanism. The spleen is in charge of the muscles in the human body, and is the source of Qi and blood biochemistry. A deficiency in the spleen and stomach will prevent the blood from being transformed into energy, which will not provide power and nutrients to the muscles, resulting in weakness of the limbs; the kidneys are in charge of the essence of the human body, and with sufficient essence the bone marrow will be strong and the yang energy will be full. The deficiency of kidney qi leads to the inability of yang qi to reach the limbs, the cold condensation of the limbs and the weakness of the tendons; the liver is the master of tendons, the liver and kidneys are of the same origin, the deficiency of liver blood will lead to the body not having enough qi and blood to transport yang qi to the various meridians. According to the holistic view of Chinese medicine, the human body is like a precision running instrument, Yang Qi is the power to run the body, Qi and blood are like the engine oil to transport the power to each internal organ of the body, insufficient Yang Qi, coupled with the lack of engine oil, insufficient power transmission, the human body will be blocked meridians, which will lead to phlegm, dampness, stagnant blood, poisonous evil stagnation of meridians, meridians are not open, the body will have various symptoms, thus losing function inch by inch. Treatment: tonifying the vital energy and regulating the Directing Vessel According to the dialectical treatment in Chinese medicine, the main treatment for motor neuron disease is to tonify the spleen and kidney, tonify the kidney and benefit the qi, strengthen the spleen and benefit the qi, and regulate the liver and qi, which simply means tonifying the vital energy and regulating the Directing Vessel. Acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, cupping of dorsal acupoints and other Chinese acupuncture treatments are used, together with acupuncture injections of western nerve-nourishing drugs such as methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. Two groups of acupuncture points are selected and used alternately, one for the liver, spleen and kidneys, such as Baihui, Fengchi, Hegu, Taichong, and Feosanli, and the other for the Governor’s Vessel, which is known as the “Sea of Yang” because of its role in regulating the qi and blood of the Yang meridian. Extracting the Governor’s Vessel is equivalent to adding fire to the body that is turning into cold ice and replenishing Yang energy. Only by nourishing the acquired vital energy and replenishing the innate vital energy, as well as “adding fire” to the body, can we slow down the process of “freezing” in people with progressive freezing. Care: slowing down the progression of the disease and alleviating the patient’s pain In motor neuron disease, there is no cure yet, so it is especially important to provide reasonable protection for the patient. Reasonable care can slow down the development of the disease and reduce the patient’s pain. First of all, the patient’s family should pay attention to helping the patient to regulate their emotions, so that they can maintain a happy mood, optimistic attitude towards life, have confidence in overcoming the disease and actively cooperate with the doctor’s treatment. For early stage patients, they should be encouraged to stick to work and perform simple exercises and daily activities to improve the immune function of the body, while strenuous activities, high-intensity exercise, exertion and overly aggressive physiotherapy will, on the contrary, aggravate the disease, so patients should pay attention to avoid them and pay attention to rest. In the middle of the disease, the patient’s speech is unclear, swallowing is slightly difficult, it is advisable to eat semi-solid food, because liquid food is easy to cough and choke, solid food is difficult to swallow, and the food should be rich in protein and vitamins, sufficient carbohydrates and trace elements, which can ensure the nutrition required by neuromuscular, which is beneficial to delay the progress of the disease and reduce the occurrence of complications, in addition, the diet should be light, should avoid greasy, cold and stimulating The diet should be light and avoid greasy, cold and stimulating foods. In late stage, patients with weakness in swallowing and speech, or even difficulty in breathing, should be given nasal feeding to ensure nutrition, and if necessary, use ventilator to assist breathing. Patients with muscle atrophy affecting daily activities should use protective and auxiliary devices as early as possible to prevent injuries and maintain appropriate activity levels, to give appropriate stimulation to the diseased tissues, to promote the absorption and utilization of nutrients, to delay the progress of the disease as much as possible and to prolong life. The search for a more effective treatment for motor neuron disease is a progressive and difficult disease, and there is currently no cure for this disease in Chinese and Western medicine. For the treatment of motor neuron disease, Chinese medicine and Western medicine belong to two different medical systems and have different characteristics. Western medicine treats the disease by searching for the pathogen and fighting the disease in a direct confrontation manner. Riluzole, the first drug approved by the FDA and the European Union to treat motor neuron disease, is expensive, costing several thousand dollars a month and requiring long-term use. It can only be used in the early stages of the disease to delay its course, but not to improve the patient’s motor function. TCM treatment uses the holistic view of TCM and adopts the theory of Wei-Qi, Ying-Blood and San-Jiao to identify the disease by symptoms. It is able to treat patients according to their symptoms and the course of the disease, delaying the course of the disease and improving their quality of life, while also greatly reducing their financial burden. We believe that with the development of neuroscience and in-depth understanding of the etiology and pathophysiology of motor neuron disease, TCM can find more effective treatment pathways for acromegaly patients.
