Umbilical ureteral remnants are undegenerated umbilical ureters between the navel and the bladder, where urine enters the umbilical ureters causing umbilical ureteral fistulas, umbilical ureteral cysts, or umbilical ureteral infections. The umbilical ureter does not close completely after the baby is born and urine leaks out of the umbilical hole when the bladder pressure is high. The amount of urine leaking is directly related to the width of the umbilical ureter. Umbilical ureter cysts form from fluid secreted by the umbilical ureter epithelium due to the closure of the two ends of the umbilical ureter and the non-closure of the middle. The main presentation is a cystic mass in the middle of the lower abdomen. When the cyst is large, it may compress the bowel causing abdominal pain, and rupture of the cyst may lead to infection. The umbilical ureter is not degenerated and urine entering the umbilical ureter can cause infection. In severe cases, the patient may experience urinary leakage from the umbilicus, or leakage of urine-like fluid with foul odor and recurrent redness and swelling of the umbilicus. Patients with umbilical ureteral remnants need to go to the urology department of the hospital in time for specialist examination and treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
