Treatment of oral cancer

The goal of oral cancer treatment is to remove and cure the tumor, protect and preserve important organ structures and functions, avoid or minimize sequelae, prevent the recurrence of oral cancer, and improve the patient’s quality of life. At present, the treatment of oral cancer still focuses on surgery and advocates the comprehensive treatment of multiple disciplines. For early-stage tumors, surgery alone can often achieve better treatment results, while the remaining functional disorders of patients are less severe. For advanced stage patients, if surgical conditions are available, surgery is still recommended. Pre-operative or post-operative treatment should be combined with radiotherapy and other comprehensive treatments, and repair and reconstruction of defective tissues should be done at the same time as surgical removal of tumor to maximize the recovery of patient’s function and improve patient’s survival quality. Since there are many important tissue structures in the head and neck, including important nerves and blood vessels, surgery is less difficult for early stage patients and patients can recover more easily. In contrast, in advanced stage patients, the tumor may be close to or directly invade important nerves and blood vessels, which makes it difficult to ensure complete resection and greatly reduces the surgical effect. For those patients who have developed distant metastases, they do not belong to the scope of surgical treatment. Such patients should be treated with a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. With the change of medical model nowadays, doctors also need to carefully consider the patient’s occupation, financial ability, subjective will and compliance when designing the best treatment plan for tumors. Among these factors, patient compliance will have a serious impact on the outcome of the disease. In clinical practice, many patients do not adhere to their former habits such as smoking and alcohol abuse in a timely manner after surgery, and if these risk factors persist, it will lead to tumor recurrence. Many patients choose TCM treatment because they are worried about the complications caused by surgery or radiotherapy, which delays the best time for surgical treatment. It should be noted that TCM is useful for regulating one’s immunity. However, in the treatment of oral cancer, TCM is not the main treatment tool. As mentioned earlier, surgery for early stage oral cancer is the best treatment method. For advanced stage patients, TCM can be considered as an auxiliary means to regulate their immunity in the process of comprehensive treatment, but it should be carried out according to their own condition and according to the specialist’s medical advice.
