Funnel chest is a very common type of congenital sternal deformity. The normal human sternum is flat, while the sternum of patients with funnel chest is depressed backward. The backward depression of the sternum has the following effects on the human body: 1) direct compression of the patient’s heart and lungs, which directly affects the patient’s cardiopulmonary function physiologically; 2) a very great impact on the patient’s psychology. For example, when patients are dating men and women during adolescence, playing basketball on the sports field, or swimming in the pool, the sunken sternum and strange shape will make patients feel that they are different from others, and patients with funnel chest will have low self-esteem, autism, and even suicidal tendencies. Early intervention, such as surgery or minimally invasive treatment, is recommended for patients with funnel chest before puberty.
