Esophageal cancer is a relatively common malignant tumor of digestive system. The most common pathological type of esophageal cancer is esophageal squamous carcinoma, which is generally not too sensitive to chemotherapy. In other words, the overall survival time may be less than 2-3 years, and it is rare to see more than 3 or 5 years. Of course, some very early esophageal cancers may be cured by chemotherapy. However, in general, early-stage esophageal cancer is best treated by surgery first, and then whether adjuvant chemotherapy is needed after surgery, so as to maximize the survival period. For some advanced esophageal cancer patients who are not able to undergo surgery, radiotherapy is also the main treatment because most of the esophageal cancer is sensitive to radiotherapy. In other words, squamous esophageal cancer is more sensitive to radiotherapy, but in the case of esophageal adenocarcinoma, it is rare and not too sensitive to radiotherapy, but chemotherapy is effective.
