How to treat baby diarrhea

Baby diarrhea in medicine called “pediatric diarrhea disease”, is a group of multi-pathogen, multi-factors caused by an increase in the number of stools and stool characteristics of the digestive tract syndrome. Pediatric diarrhea disease occurs in infants and young children under 3 years of age, 6 months to 2 years of age with a high incidence, is one of the main causes of pediatric malnutrition, growth and development disorders. The principle of treatment of baby diarrhea is reasonable diet, maintain nutrition; quickly correct the water, electrolyte balance disorders; control of internal and external intestinal infections; symptomatic treatment to strengthen care, prevention and treatment of complications; avoid the abuse of antibiotics. Dietary treatment: mild breastfeeding infants continue to breastfeed, appropriately limit the number of breastfeeding or shorten the duration of each breastfeeding, suspension of complementary foods; artificially fed children can be fed with an equal amount of rice broth or diluted milk or other milk substitutes, from rice soup, porridge, noodles and so on, gradually over to a normal diet. For lactose intolerant children, add lactase enzyme when feeding, or be de-lactose diet. Allergic diarrhea, consider protein allergy, can be changed to hydrolyzed milk powder or amino acid milk powder. During diarrhea, continue to eat, give the baby a normal diet appropriate to its age, as far as possible, do not “fasting”, fasting can lead to prolonged symptoms, nutrient loss. Correct water and electrolyte disorders: (1) oral rehydration salts (ORS) is suitable for children who are mildly: moderately dehydrated and able to eat; intravenous rehydration is suitable for those who have severe vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal distension, and more than moderate dehydration. (2) Correct acidosis, electrolyte disorders. Drug treatment: (1) Pathogenic treatment: non-infectious diarrhea generally do not need antibacterial drugs. However, systemic bacterial infections and diarrhea caused by invasive bacterial infections must be appropriately given systemic anti-infective treatment. According to the clinical manifestations, pathogens or fecal culture results, antibiotics are selected to treat intestinal infections caused by sensitive bacteria. (2) Micro-ecological therapy: By restoring the micro-ecological balance of the human intestinal tract, it can achieve the purpose of treating intestinal diseases. (3) Adjuvant therapy: intestinal mucosal protectors, intestinal dynamics inhibitors, antisecretory drugs, etc. (4) Zinc supplementation therapy: WHO recommends that children with diarrhea continue to be treated with oral rehydration salts while taking oral zinc supplementation, which can enhance immune function and prevent recurrence. The causes of baby diarrhea are many, can be viruses, bacterial infections, food allergies, lactose intolerance, improper feeding, systemic diseases associated symptoms, etc., so the recurrence of baby diarrhea need to be hospitalized after symptomatic treatment!
