Home management of acute fever in children

A sudden fever in a child is something that many families are very anxious about, and a high fever is something that parents are very worried about, especially at night. Many parents will come to the hospital to see the pediatric emergency room because of their child’s fever, and often see families running to the hospital at night with their child in tow, with the pediatric emergency room overcrowded. In fact, not all children with fever must run to the hospital in order to reduce the fever, but reasonable home treatment can not only be equally effective in reducing the fever, but also allow the child to get the earliest possible treatment to avoid delays. The treatment of fever usually has two methods, drug cooling and physical cooling. Medications commonly used to lower fever in children are ibuprofen oral solution and acetaminophen oral solution, which are usually applied when the child’s temperature exceeds 38.5°C or when he or she is obviously uncomfortable, and the dosage is available on the bottle according to age or weight, and is taken orally, if needed, once every six hours, up to four times a day. In children with a high fever that does not subside, the two drugs can be alternated, such as using ibuprofen first and then applying acetaminophen 4 hours later if the fever does not subside. Most children can successfully reduce their fever at home with both medications. When a child has a sudden fever, physical cooling can usually play an auxiliary role in reducing the fever, especially in low-grade fever, and is the preferred method of reducing fever, safe without side effects. The common methods of physical cooling are warm water wipes, reduced clothing and the application of antipyretic N. Warm water wipes are recommended for the forehead, armpits, groin and other locations for better results. When the fever is high, drink more water to urinate, reduce clothing, and be sure to correct the wrong view of covering the quilt to sweat to reduce fever. Note that this article describes the heat treatment for acute fever, there are many causes of fever, and fever reduction is only symptomatic treatment. If your child has drowsiness, poor spirit, reduced activity, reduced eating, vomiting, less urination, faster breathing, etc., it is recommended to go to the hospital in a timely manner.
