What’s with the choking feeling?

A choking feeling may be caused by foreign body in the esophagus, or it may be caused by chronic pharyngitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal cancer and other diseases.
1. Esophageal foreign body: It means that due to dietary carelessness, foreign body is swallowed by mistake, such as fish splinter, bone, jujube and so on, and the foreign body is embedded in the esophagus. The main manifestations are foreign body sensation in the esophagus, difficulty in swallowing, pain and other symptoms. This causes a feeling of choking.
2. Chronic pharyngitis: refers to the chronic inflammation of the mucosa of the pharynx. It is mainly characterized by symptoms such as pharyngeal discomfort, dryness and itchiness, foreign body sensation, etc., which can also cause a choking feeling.
3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): a chronic disease in which the contents of the stomach and duodenum reflux into the esophagus, resulting in a series of symptoms. The main manifestations are heartburn, reflux, burning sensation in the epigastrium, belching, difficulty in swallowing and other symptoms. It can also cause a choking feeling.
4. Esophageal cancer: it is a malignant tumor occurring in the epithelium of esophagus. In early stage, it mainly manifests as discomfort behind the sternum, burning sensation, slow passage of food and feeling of stagnation or mild choking sensation; in middle and late stage, it mainly manifests as progressive dysphagia, food reflux, pain in swallowing and other symptoms. It can also cause a choking sensation.
