Thoracentesis for fluid aspiration

The method of thoracic puncture and fluid extraction for patients who are in good health can be done by using the practice of anti-riding across the chair, placing both hands on the back of the chair and performing puncture and fluid extraction from the ninth intercostal space in the posterior back subscapular line. If the patient is in a weaker condition, he or she should sit in a semi-recumbent position at the head of the bed and select the seventh intercostal interval in the mid-axillary line for the puncture. The puncture is usually performed by entering the needle vertically along the upper edge of the ribs to extract fluid, which can avoid damaging the intercostal vessels and intercostal nerves and reduce the patient’s pain. Therefore, different puncture and fluid extraction methods should be used for different patients.
