Patients may be seen in gynaecology, but if the pain is persistent and does not subside, or if it is accompanied by redness, swelling, fever, rupture or sunken nipples, the first consultation may be with breast surgery. If the skin folds are obvious like “orange peel”, sunken like “dimples”, or if there is a bloody discharge from the nipple, the first consultation should be with the breast surgeon or oncologist.
