Melanin in the gums

Melanosis of the gums is a more complex problem. It can be of systemic origin (e.g., endocrine problems, hemochromatosis, antimalarial drug treatment, trauma, etc.), as well as local factors (e.g., certain restorations in the teeth), or even related to a person’s ethnicity. It is necessary to differentiate them. It is important to distinguish between gingival melanosis in the general sense, which usually does not have any systemic problems or local factors, and a simple localized excess of gingival melanin, which only has an aesthetic impact. There are many ways to remove it, often by laser or surgical methods. This condition is not uncommon in clinical practice.
