What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease in which gastric contents reflux into the esophagus and areas above the esophagus causing a series of clinical manifestations such as acid reflux, heartburn, and other symptoms, and needs to be treated aggressively to improve the symptoms. GERD occurs mainly when the anti-reflux barrier of the esophagus is impaired, causing gastric contents to reflux into the esophagus or parts above the esophagus, and under the action of gastric contents, especially gastric acid, patients will experience a series of symptoms such as acid reflux, heartburn, chest pain, cough, and so on. When GERD occurs, patients can take omeprazole, rabeprazole and other proton pump inhibitors to inhibit the secretion of gastric acid, power drugs such as domperidone, mosapride to reduce the reflux of gastric contents, but also take drugs to protect the gastric mucosa, such as misoprostol to reduce the damage of gastroesophageal mucosa.
