What are the symptoms of muscle atrophy?

Muscle atrophy is a decrease in skeletal muscle volume, usually manifested by frequent falls, bedriddenness, impaired mobility, and even life-threatening conditions. In the case of neurogenic muscle atrophy, the clinical manifestations will appear in different segments depending on the damage to the nerves. The earliest symptoms of muscular atrophy appear in the face, where facial muscle weakness is manifested by inability to close the eyelids, chewing disorders, facial hypesthesia, and decreased corneal reflexes. Continued downward progression can cause damage to the extremities. When the skeletal muscles atrophy, the strength of the muscles will also be reduced and the extension and flexion of the limbs will be severely affected, with the force of muscle contraction unable to drive the bones. Mild patients will live unchanged, while severe patients with muscle strength level 0 will even be completely paralyzed in bed. The quality of life of the patient is seriously affected. If the disease is uncontrollable and continues to develop, it can cause smooth muscle paralysis of the digestive tract, difficulty in swallowing and loss of gastrointestinal motility; respiratory muscle paralysis, difficulty in breathing and death by asphyxiation; medullary paralysis and damage to the nervous system. In conclusion, most clinical manifestations of muscle atrophy are reflected in motor incoordination and muscle weakness. Early treatment can greatly alleviate the symptoms and avoid tragedies.
