If the amount of pneumothorax is less than 30%, the pneumothorax can be treated conservatively with rest and oxygen, and generally the pneumothorax can be cured within 1-2 weeks. If the volume of pneumothorax is greater than 30%, it is necessary to perform thoracentesis and suction or closed chest drainage to treat the pneumothorax, which will generally heal in about a week. If the pneumothorax is caused by ruptured alveoli, it is best to use thoracoscopic wedge resection of pulmonary alveoli with pleural fixation, so that the pneumothorax is less likely to recur. If the first pneumothorax is treated conservatively or by closed chest drainage without thoracoscopic surgery, the recurrence rate after the first pneumothorax is 50%. If thoracoscopic surgery is not used after the second pneumothorax, the recurrence rate of pneumothorax will reach 80%. Therefore, the second time a pneumothorax occurs, it should be treated by thoracoscopic surgery.
