Questions about the treatment of depression

With the arrival of the depression season, many depressed patients have their first depressive state or relapse. This time, the author will only give some brief explanation on the problems encountered during the treatment and recovery period of depression, in order to help our depressed friends to get out of the haze and see the sunny day as soon as possible. Most depressed patients have a strong desire to seek treatment and hope they can recover completely as soon as possible. Most of them come to seek medical treatment only when they are overwhelmed by depression. Some patients also have physical symptoms of depression, such as dizziness, headache, scalp numbness, abdominal discomfort, and so on. Poor sleep or excessive sleep are also possible manifestations of depression. All of these symptoms that affect the quality of life are something that patients are eager to get rid of. Therefore, when they seek help from a doctor, they are often eager to get rid of most or even all of their symptoms in a very short period of time. During the course of treatment, it is difficult to accept the slightest fluctuation or a little time. Either they have doubts about the treatment plan or about the doctor’s skill level, or they think they are too sick to be treated. Some patients will have doubts about the treatment, change, reduce, stop or even interrupt the treatment, making the treatment time longer and more difficult. Some patients go around to seek medical help, this hospital to eat this drug treatment for a few days, no change will immediately change to another hospital for another drug and then eat a few days. After switching around, they have taken a lot of drugs and seen many doctors, but their condition has not improved at all or even worsened. Some patients, after recovering from depression, have pessimistic feelings because their moods are not good again or fluctuate, thinking that depression is relapsing and they can’t be saved because they are always repeatedly like this. The above misconceptions are caused by the lack of understanding of depression and its treatment by the patients. We should know that the current treatment of depression is a symptomatic treatment. In other words, the treatment of depression is firstly to control the symptoms. Some of the antidepressants commonly used in clinical practice are neurotransmitter modulators that regulate the concentration of neurotransmitters to improve the symptoms and cure the disease. The regulation of neurotransmitters does not happen overnight, but requires the gradual accumulation and continuous action of drugs in the body to achieve the effect. This accumulation of blood levels takes time. In general, the onset of action of the first-line antidepressants in common use is 2-4 weeks, and the dosage needs to be adjusted under the observation and guidance of the doctor. Some patients will be slower to take effect, some patients do not adapt to certain drugs, each person’s physique, different conditions, drug regulation should be individualized to receive better results. After the medication starts to work, there will be a period of continuous treatment, when the medication is added to a certain amount, and the final cure can be achieved only after 1-2 months of treatment. In view of the fact that depression is a disease with a high recurrence rate, after the depressive symptoms are completely cured, there will be a period of maintenance medication to control the disease to reduce recurrence or relapse. Finally, it is also important for patients to know and understand the knowledge about depression. As the saying goes, if you know yourself and your opponent, you will never lose a battle. Only if you have a complete understanding of it, you can have confidence in the treatment. Only by having confidence in the treatment, correctly understanding the difficulties in the treatment process and actively cooperating with the doctor, most depressions can be cured.
