What does high fibrin degradation product mean

High fibrin degradation products usually indicate the possibility of having primary or secondary fibrinolytic disease.
Fibrin degradation products (FDP) are degradation substances produced after breaking down fibrin and fibrinogen. The level of FDP mainly reflects the function of fibrinolysis, and is often used as a reference index for various thrombotic diseases, and is one of the commonly used indexes for the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
The normal value of FDP is less than 5 μg/ml, when FDP is abnormally high, it usually indicates DIC, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, malignant tumor and other diseases. When abnormal FDP measurement is detected during physical examination, one should consult a hematologist for detailed examination to identify the cause of the disease and to carry out regular treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
