A study of the effect of risperidone on cognitive impairment in negative schizophrenia

[Abstract] Objective To understand the effect of risperidone treatment on cognitive function in patients with negative schizophrenia and the relationship between the improvement of negative symptoms and cognitive function. Methods Risperidone treatment was administered to patients with negative schizophrenia before and after assessing psychotic symptoms with the SANS and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS); cognitive function was assessed with the W iscon sin Card Sorting Test (WCST ), the Wechsler Memory Test (WMS), and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-RC). Results The risperidone group improved psychiatric symptoms, memory, and executive function, and the reduction in SANS factor scores correlated with improvement in comprehension, memorization scale scores, and WCST scores in the WMS. Conclusion Risperidone improved psychiatric symptoms and some cognitive impairment in patients with negative schizophrenia, and the improvement of negative symptoms correlated significantly with the improvement of cognitive function.
