Coughing with phlegm in babies is a process due to secretions from the trachea and bronchi or exudate from the alveoli, which is expelled from the body with the help of coughing. It is commonly found in the process of middle and late stage of external infection, bronchitis, pneumonia and other diseases, often accompanied by infection, fever and other symptoms, often with sputum and unpleasant cough. Since babies do not cough and spit, parents can use the following methods to help babies to discharge phlegm: 1. head low feet high position gravitational discharge: let the baby’s head low feet high position, can be supine or prone, use several pillows to make a plane with a slope, tilt angle of about 20 degrees, let the phlegm flow out automatically, pay attention to observation during the discharge, if the baby appears uncomfortable phenomenon, should immediately stop. 2.Drink more water to discharge phlegm: Drinking more warm water can make the sticky secretions dilute and be easily coughed out, which is conducive to stopping cough and expectoration, and is conducive to the elimination of local inflammation. At the same time, it can also improve blood circulation, so that the waste or toxins produced by the body’s metabolism can be rapidly discharged from urine, thus reducing its stimulation of the respiratory tract. 3.Gently pat the back to expel phlegm (emergency method when phlegm cannot be coughed out): In the interval of the child’s cough, let the child lie on its side or hold it up on its side, and gently pat the child’s front and side chest and back with the palm of your hand. The force of the patting should not be too great and alternate between the two sides. Pat each side for at least 3-5 minutes, 2-3 times a day. It should be noted that within 2 hours after the baby has eaten, it is not advisable to keep the head low and feet high for a long time or to pat to expel phlegm, otherwise the risk of vomiting will easily occur; during the process of removing phlegm, make sure to constantly observe the change of the baby’s facial expression and stop immediately if shortness of breath or any discomfort occurs.
