The use of insomnia treatment drugs

Experts currently recommend new non-benzodiazepines as the preferred sedative-hypnotic drugs, including zolpidem, zopiclone, and zaleplon. However, for patients with mild anxiety symptoms, medium and long half-life benzodiazepines (Glaxoquine, Xanax, Valium, and Clonidine) can be considered to play a dual role of hypnosis and anxiolysis respectively by taking advantage of their high concentration at night and residual effects during the day. For some chronic insomnia patients with ineffective sedative-hypnotic drugs, most of them are accompanied by depression or anxiety, and can be considered to be treated with antidepressants with sedative effect, which can significantly improve or cure their insomnia. In particular, certain antidepressants with sedative effects. Long-term use of sedative-hypnotic drugs is not as terrible as one might think, and is safe as long as the principles are followed. The principles to follow: intermittent medication, medication on demand, and alternating medication. If the termination of sedative-hypnotic drug therapy does significantly affect the patient’s quality of life, it may be a patient who needs long-term drug therapy, and when other methods are not effective in relieving symptoms, especially individual elderly patients on long-term medication, maintenance therapy at appropriate doses can be considered after weighing the pros and cons. For these patients who need long-term treatment with hypnotic drugs, the principles of intermittent medication (e.g., 3-5 days a week) and “on-demand medication” are currently advocated abroad. The specific methods of “on-demand medication” are as follows: 1. 15 minutes before going to bed when sleep is expected to be difficult (e.g., when a certain life event occurs during the day); 2. 3. according to the needs of daytime activities, i.e. when you have important work or things to do during the day on the second day. Alternating medications: For patients who are prone to decreased efficacy of certain sedative-hypnotic drugs, 2 effective medications can also be chosen to alternate regularly, which can continuously improve symptoms. The most important thing for patients with mild anxiety symptoms is psychological support and the establishment of good sleep hygiene habits.
