Proteinuria is a disease caused by abnormal metabolism of the kidneys, and it belongs to the category of kidney disease “urine turbidity” and “gonorrhea (increased frequency of urination, dribbling and astringent pain)” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture treatment can choose acupuncture points such as Zhongji, Guanyuan, Qihai, Ren Yu, Jingmen, Taixi and Sanyinjiao. Proteinuria is a typical symptom of chronic kidney disease. In Chinese medicine theory, it is mainly due to insufficiency of kidney qi and deficiency of kidney yang, resulting in the kidneys not being able to play their normal roles of mastering water and absorbing qi. Acupuncture treatment should follow the principles of tonifying the kidneys to hold qi (treating the kidneys’ failure to hold qi by tonifying the kidneys), clearing the lymph and draining the turbidity, and selecting acupuncture points of the kidney meridian and the bladder meridian to perform acupuncture. Zhongji, Guanyuan, and Qihai are Ren Chakra points, and are located in the abdomen near the bladder to effectively facilitate the watercourse and treat urinary diseases, while Ren Yu is a bladder meridian point and the back of the kidneys, and with the collection of Jingmen to regulate the kidney meridian qi together, and play a role in tonifying the kidney qi. Taixi is the original point of the kidney meridian, which is an important point where the original qi of the kidney meridian passes through and stays, and together with the bladder meridian’s Shenwei and the spleen meridian’s Sanyinjiao, the three meridians of the liver, spleen, and kidney are dredged together to treat proteinuria. The presence of proteinuria is a sign that the body has developed into chronic kidney disease and needs to be taken seriously. Acupuncture can be effective, but it also needs to be combined with medication or other treatments to control symptoms. It is recommended that patients with proteinuria who need acupuncture treatment go to a regular hospital.
